จังหวัดสมุทรสงครามได้ปรากฏชื่อครั้งแรกในนาม “แม่กลอง” จากเอกสารบันทึกจดหมายเหตุของทูตฝรั่งเศษที่เดินทางเข้ามาในประเทศไทย สมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช แห่งกรุงศรีอยุธยา ดังปรากฏเป็นแผนที่โบราณมากมาย แสดงชื่อ Maeclon (แม่กลอง) ไว้ในแผนที่ ซึ่งจัดอยู่ในอาณาบริเวณทะเลปากอ่าวไทย ตรงกับตำแหน่งที่ตั้งของชุมชนแม่กลอง หรือจังหวัดสมุทรสงครามในปัจจุบัน

        จากนั้น จอห์น ครอฟอร์ด ทูตอังกฤษที่เดินทางเข้ามาในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ได้ทำแผนที่ขึ้นและระบุชื่อ Meklong (แม่กลอง) ไว้ในแผนที่ บริเวณที่ตรงกับจังหวัดสมุทรสงครามในปัจจุบันเช่นเดียวกัน

        จังหวัดสมุทรสงครามเป็นแผ่นดินที่เกิดขึ้นใหม่ ในราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 18 เนื่องจากการทับถมของโคลนตะกอนบริเวณปากแม่น้ำ เกิดเป็นทีดอน จนกลายมาเป็นที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำขนาดใหญ่ พิจารณาได้จากแผนที่ภาพถ่ายดาวเทียม ซึ่งแสดงการแบ่งแยกอายุของพื้นผิวโลก หรือหลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์และโบราณคดี จากอายุของชั้นดินและการใช้ทรัพยากรของกระทรวงวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีเป็นเกณฑ์

บรรดาภาชนะเครื่องปั้นดินเผาโบราณ ที่พบจากการขุดค้นจัดแสดงอยู่ภายในพิพิธภัณฑ์เขายี่สาร All of the ancient cloy utensils excavated are on display in Khao Yisarn Museum.	เศียรพระพุทธรูปโบราณ มีอายุอยู่ในช่วงสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาตอนปลาย พบ ณ ชุมชนยี่สาร This Buddha image head dating bock to the late Ayutthaya Period was discovered at Yisarn community.

        จากหลักฐานการขุดค้นทางโบราณคดี ณ ตำบลยี่สาร อำเภออัมพวา พอว่าบรรดาเครื่องถ้วยภาชนะจากเตาเผาแหล่งต่าง ๆ ทั้งจากในประเทศ และจากประเทศจีน รวมทั้งร่องรอยแหล่งที่อยู่อาศัยหนาแน่น แสดงให้เห็นว่า ชุมชนยี่สารในอดีตเคยเป็นชุมชนค้าขายหรือเมืองท่าชายฝั่งที่มีอายุอยู่ในยุคสมัยประวัติศาสตร์ของประเทศไทย ในช่วงกรุงศรีอยุธยาตอนปลายลงมา หรือในราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 19-20

        The first recorded reference to Samut Songkhram province appears under the name “Meklong” in the documents of a French ambassador who cam to Thailand during the reign of King Narai of the Ayutthaya period. The name “Maecion” (Meklong) appears in many ancient maps. It was located at the mouth of the Mae Klong River, where the Maeklong community of Samut Songkhram is now found.

        Then, John Crawford, a British ambassador who came to Thailand during the reign of King Rama II, produced a map and specified the name of “Meklong” (Mae Klong) in the area that now corresponds to Samut Songkhram Province.

        From satellite imagery showing the age of the earth’s surface along with historical and archeological evidence as well as resources of the Thai Ministry of Science and Technology that help to pinpoint the ages of the various sedimentary layers, It has been concluded that the area of Samut Songkhram is relatively new, formed during the 18th Buddhist century when alluvial mud piled up near the river mouth, creating a highland area, which gradually became a grand river valley.

        In archeological excavations at Tambon Yisarn, Amphawa district, many ceramic bowls and plates, originating from from numerous kilns in Thailand and China, together with evidence of a crowded community were discovered. This indicates that in the past, Yisarn was a trading community or sea port in the late Ayutthaya period, approximately the 19th and 20th centuries B.E.
