กะลาซอ คือ ส่วนประกอบของเครื่องดนตรีประเภทซออู้ ทำจากผลของมะพร้าวชนิดหนึ่งที่เรียกกันว่า “มะพร้อมซอ” ซึ่งเป็นมะพร้าวผลที่ใช้สำหรับการทำกะลาซอโดยเฉพาะ ด้วยลักษณะพิเศษของรูปทรงที่กลมมนคล้ายนมสาวหรือเศียรช้าง เมื่อนำมาประกอบเป็นซอแล้ว สามารถให้เสียงก้องกังวาน ไพเราะ เสนาะหูอย่างหาที่เปรียบมิได้

        กะลาของมะพร้าวซอ เมื่อนำมาทำเป็นกะโหลกซอ ซึ่งเป็นโครงสร้างหลักส่วนหนึ่งของซอ หรือที่เรียกกันว่า กะลาซอ โดยอาศัยความสามารถในการแยกแยะเสียงดนตรีไทยเดิมผนวกเข้ากับศิลปะการแกะสลักลวดลายอันวิจิตรงดงาม เช่น ลายพุดตาน ลายตัวละครในวรรณคดี หรือลายเทพเจ้า ลายปีนักษัตร ลายนามย่อ ฯลฯ จึงกลายเป็นเครื่องดนตรี ที่ให้ทั้งความสวยงาม และความไพเราะของเสียงซอ แตกต่างไปจากศิลปะในการแกะสลักทั่วไป

         พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัย ทรงโปรดงานศิลปะทุกแขนง ทรงโปรดให้ยกเว้นภาษี “อากรสวน” ซึ่งเก็บจากการนับต้นผลไม้ให้แก่มะพร้าวซอเป็นกรณีพิเศษ

         The Kala Fiddle is a type of musical instrument made from a coconut shell, called “So Coconut”. The So Coconut has a rounded shape, like that of a young woman’s breast or elephant’s head. This gives it distinctive resonant sound, which has no comparison.

         The shell of the So Coconut is used as the fiddle body, to form the major structure of the fiddle, so-called “Kala So”. The coconut shell acts as a sounding board to perfectly produce the notes of traditional Thai music. The “Kala So” is also decorated with intricate carving from a variety of patterns such as the Pudtan, a demi-god pattern, a pattern based on characters in Thai literature, the twelve animals of a 12 year cycle, or short names, turning it into a beautiful work of art that produces melodious music like nothing else.

          King Rama II, a devout lover and patron of the arts, thus, excluded So coconut trees from a “garden tax”, based on the number of fruit trees a person owned possessed.
